- Ease of use
- Efficient use of extremely large vector and raster datasets
- Relational database integration
|“Absolutely brilliant. I am getting the hang of it and am getting more and more impressed with PlanetGis. The only thing the program now needs to do is print money and the world would be perfect.” -- CR, Ceres|
PlanetGIS focuses on decision support and asset management systems. Basic GIS functions are easy and efficient. PlanetGIS is a complete relational database platform combined with the power of spatial modelling (maps).
PlanetGIS is easy to learn and was designed to enable anyone to start and manage a GIS project from the ground up. All stages from data capture, data manipulation through thematic mapping and aesthetic map production are simple and efficient.
“Planet” runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/7/8/10 32bit & 64bit and will in future run on Linux, ’Mac and Android.
PlanetGIS Explorer is free and includes a large portion of the functionality of the paid-for versions. Explorer allows you to navigate through maps, query map elements and view attributes, database information, photographs and documents. You can customize the appearance of maps, add annotations, page frames and title blocks and save any changes you make. Selections of features or entire layers can be exported to SHP, KML and GPX. Download PlanetGIS Explorer here.
PlanetGIS Professional is the most popular choice for all-round GIS work. Professional allows you to capture and manipulate spatial features, import GIS layers from external sources and organize and maintain your GIS projects.
|“OK, this is impressive. The capture of all of the Cape Peninsula's Tiff Colour Orthos was fast and the resultant PlanetGIS dataset is around 600Mb. Renders VERY FAST. Congrats, this is just as good as Sid or ECW (probably better). I Imported the same stuff into ArcMap 8.3... So I ended up with a bigger dataset... And MUCH slower to render.” -- RC, Cape Town|
PlanetGIS Enterprise adds connectivity to Oracle, SQL Server, management of handheld data collectors and offline synchronization.
A detailed feature comparison matrix outlining the differences between the above 3 editions of PlanetGIS is available here.
PlanetGIS Explorer is completely free.
Trial versions of PlanetGIS Professional and Enterprise offer full functionality for several months. Please create an account to download a trial version and some maps.
